Get a sneak peek of The Same Beat, a new YA novel from West 44 Books that will be available February 1, just in time for Valentine’s Day. One of six new YA, hi-lo titles for spring, the verse novel follows Teegan, a teen a bit adrift in thinking about her future plans after high school. When an opportunity comes up to attend journalism camp in New York City, Teegan experiences many firsts, including falling in love with Marcy, who is assigned to work the same beat.
Author Dakota Britton-Barrows (at left) is a poet and a writer who manages a queer café in New Hampshire. They have previously published their own zine, Term. In their spare time, they can be found volunteering as a facilitator for the local LGBTQ Youth Group, sipping on lattes, perusing around greenhouses, and browsing the local bookstores for their next great read! They live with their wife, Danielle, and their 32 houseplants in Dover, New Hampshire.
Cover designer Katelyn E. Reynolds, an art director and designer with more than a decade of experience in publishing, captured a key theme of the novel: that words matter to the protagonist, Teegan. It is through researching, writing and reporting together that Teegan’s feelings for Marcy are revealed—much like the heart on the cover. Reynolds says about her work, “I like the challenge of taking a concept and bringing it to life with fun, trendy, and innovative designs that capture one’s imagination. Telling a story through great design is what motivates me.”
